New Puppies Arrive

Cally had her puppies! Fred had brought the crate in on Friday and although I had let Cally inside because of the cold, I decided it was too close to puppy time to let her sleep up in the bed. She had been in the bed all day yesterday, didn't eat or drink and I was starting to worry about her.
We got her down and in the crate in the sunroom for bed. About 12:45 am, Gabrielle came downstairs and started siting vigil with Cally. Then about 1:20, I believe the first puppy was born. At that point, Gabby barked and barked until finally every light in the house was on. The outside dogs were looking in the windows, wagging their tails. I made coffee.
Cally had little difficulty (at least it seems) having six puppies in about two hours. The sixth was tiny compared to the others, so we thought it was the runt, thus the last. So we waited 30 minutes to make sure that was the last puppy and then we took the puppies up, put dry bedding in the crate and moved the group into the living room by the fireplace....(It was 5 degrees outside while all this was going on in the house).
Surprisingly, after we moved the crate and Cally walked around a bit, she had three more puppies in the next hour. Fred had to help with one especially but the last one was the most colorful and Fred named him Dexter. By that time, it was about 5 am.

Now, it's a sunny Sunday afternoon and Fred is snoring on the couch. The puppies are settled in and Cally is resting too. If you've ever had brittany spaniels, you know how mild their temperment is. I have been excited to watch Cally grow up and now getting to watch her be a mom to nine puppies is pretty neat.
Gabby and I are ready to take a little nap. Cricket remains un-impressed.
