This afternoon Fred went out to open the gate so our outside dogs could run around the farm a little bit. When he did, he noticed Tori, our chow mix, didn't get up and come out. She's usually one of the first. He came in and told me so I put on my boots and gloves and went out to see about her. I am sad to say she appears to be paralyzed and can't use any of her legs. I couldn't get her to stand up at all so I picked her up and moved her around then got her some fresh hay for a bed. She drank quite a bit of water and ate some baked chicken breast I grabbed out of the fridge.
Since then, she's had two feedings, more water and two doses of antibiotic. The vet being closed on Saturday afternoon and Sunday means we are just guessing at what to do to help her until Monday when she can get real professional care. I gave her some pain medicine we had leftover from another dog episode (I've had so many over the past few years) and have moved her around throughout the day, from side to side and such. She does wag her tail when I go out to see her so I'm hoping she'll get better in a few days.
After the potluck for Dr. Johnston at Tina's house, I had a phone message from my mom. Our old dog, Dusty, died today. She was a border collie mix that I brought home and stuck Mother and Daddy with at least ten years ago. She always went with Daddy when he would walk and Mother could keep up with Dad by calling for Dusty. She was a good dog, very loyal and loving. Everybody in the family will miss her...she was a joy to have around all these years.
Just not a good dog day for us today!
